DPS PB WORKS FOR THEATRE!

Okay, this is pretty cool! As I began to explore the DPS PB Works categories of instruction, I was almost positive that I would have to create one for Theatre . . . but, lo 'n behold!! My theatre-teachin' buddy Karen Newell had already set one up! WOOT!! So, I excitedly began adding resources to this page . . . and I look forward to adding much more! I am going to inform my district colleagues about this DPS Theatre PB Works page in our gathering at the beginning of the year. How cool would it be if ALL OF US made it a point to contribute to this page??!! I will create a LESSON PLAN page that we can all share resources on :)

Here's a link to the DPS PB Works Theatre page that I added resources to!

WIKI, WACKY, WHAT??

As I moved forward through my DPS Tech Challenge I began my investigation of Wikipedia. I have, of course, used Wikipedia previous to this . . . but never dared to edit the content of its pages! I found a Durham School of the Arts Wiki page and found that someone had posted an article on a play that I directed called THE LARAMIE PROJECT (2005). Our play was picketed by a bunch of haters from the Fred Phelps Westboro Baptist Church . . . hence the big publicity splash and being awarded a 2005 INDY Award :) I'm not sure who the author was, but there were a few mistakes . . . so I corrected them!

ANIMOTO HAS MOJO!

I have discovered the wonderful world of Animoto through my DPS Summer Technology Challenge! The video in the right sidebar is my first attempt :) I wasn't able to do much with the *free* program, it only recorded 30 seconds of song and video - so I purchased a year long subscription. I think it will be very useful in promoting our productions and department. It could also come in handy as an introduction to my unit on the history of theatre! Animoto provides endless possibilities with the visuals and large music library. I'm looking forward to making another Animoto . . . it's kind of addicting!

DPS Technology Challenge

I'm happy to say that I have entered the DPS Technology Challenge! NOT that I want to spend my summer days sitting in front of a computer screen . . . I'm hoping to learn more about this powerful tool and how I can harness it's resources to better communicate the world of theatre - at DSA and beyond [think Buzz Lightyear :)]

AUDITIONS ANNOUNCED FOR THE OFF-BROADWAY REVIVAL OF RENT!

WANNA BE IN RENT? Submit your online video audition NOW!!

Go to: www.siteforrent.com/audition for more information!

2011 Online Auditions

Casting of a new generation of stars for this production begins next month with open calls in New York on Friday, March 18, 11 AM – 2 PM, at New World Stages, and in Los Angeles on Wednesday, March 30, 1:30 PM – 4 PM, at Hollywood United Methodist Church located at 6817 Franklin Avenue. Sign-in for both open calls will begin one hour prior.

Can’t make it to New York or Los Angeles in March? Follow the steps below to enter the 2011 online audition contest for the chance to audition for RENT in New York City, where it all began.

HOW TO ENTER:

STEP ONE

Create a digital video of you singing up to 60 seconds of your favorite song from RENT, using the following guidelines:

In order to approximate the style of RENT, males must wear jeans and white T-shirt; females must wear a skirt and form-fitting top. Sing ONE of the following songs from RENT, depending on the role for which you'd like to be considered:

Roger -- "One Song Glory"
Mark -- "What You Own"
Mimi -- "Out Tonight"
Maureen -- "Take Me or Leave Me"
Joanne -- "Take Me or Leave Me"
Benny -- "You’ll See"
Angel -- "I’ll Cover You"
Collins -- "I’ll Cover You"
You must be singing with accompaniment (piano, keyboard, or karaoke tracks only) – NO A CAPELLA performances!

All submissions must contain only YOUR original voice (with accompanying music), without any type of manipulation, whether electronic, special effects or any other means.

Each entrant must enter as a soloist only – NO DUET performances!

Video cannot be longer than 60 seconds.

STEP TWO

Next, upload your audition video to www.YouTube.com. Once your video is online, submit the YouTube video URL on RENT’s online auditions page on www.siteforrent.com before the ENTRY DEADLINE of 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time (EST) on MARCH 18, 2011.

STEP THREE

From MARCH 21 – MARCH 27, 2011, VOTE for your favorite audition video! Tell everyone you know to visit www.siteforrent.com and vote!

STEP FOUR

The online audition entrant whose video receives the most number of votes on www.siteforrent.com by 11:59 PM EST on March 27, 2011 will receive round-trip transportation to NYC for an official RENT audition with Telsey + Co in April 2011. The winner also receives one night’s stay in an NYC hotel for free.

Greetings!

Triangle Performing Arts Company is proud to announce our summer musical theatre production: ANNIE, JR.

It's upbeat plot and flamboyant characters have made Annie one of the most beloved musicals in history--what girl hasn't dreamed of performing the title role or playing the outrageous Miss Hannigan? Cast size is flexible, and the age range of the parts makes Annie Jr. ideal for productions involving different grade levels, or for middle school where students may be maturing at different rates. The bright, tuneful score is easy to sing and filled with familiar numbers.

This intensive runs Saturday, June 18 9am-5pm and Monday-Friday, June 20-24 9am-5pm with performances on Saturday and Sunday, June 25 and 26. Performance times to be determined.

Passionate performers ages 7-16 are invited to audition on Saturday, April 9, 2011. Please note this is a change from previous announcements. 1pm for 7-11 yo and 3pm for 12-16 year olds.

Please refer to this link to register and gather information on roles and audition suggestions.

We look forward to having a fantastic summer! See you soon.

Sincerely,
Michael Barriskill
